Taking on the Keto diet — Foster's Supermarket

Taking on the Keto diet

Most of us have heard of the Keto diet, but what is it exactly, and what are the benefits?

With it becoming more and more popular, we’ve put together an overview of the diet and some of the keto products you can find at Foster’s.

But please remember, we’re not experts, and we suggest you consult your physician before starting any diet.

So, what is the Keto diet?

A keto diet refers to a ketogenic diet, which is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carb diet. The goal is to get more calories from protein and fat than from carbs. When you eat less than 50 grams of carbs a day, your body will eventually be depleted of its store of sugar, so it will start to break down protein and fat for energy, causing ketosis (and weight loss). Generally, the goal is to lose weight quickly while feeling fuller with fewer cravings. It should also boost your mood and improve your mental focus and provide you with a steadier supply of energy. It can also assist in reducing acne, and some neurological diseases (again, see your physician for advice on this). We’ll be focusing on the weight loss element of the diet.

What can I eat?

The majority of your meals should be based around the following foods;

  • Meat (red meat, steak, ham, sausage, bacon, chicken & turkey)
  • Fattier fish (salmon, trout, tuna)
  • Eggs
  • Butter & cream
  • Cheese (unprocessed, cheddar, goat, cream, blue, mozzarella)
  • Nuts & Seeds (almonds, walnuts, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds)
  • Healthy oils (extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil & avocado oil)
  • Avocados (whole avocados or freshly made guacamole)
  • Low-carb veggies (most green veggies, tomatoes, onions & peppers)

What should I avoid?

Pretty much any food that is high in carbs. In saying this, if you can’t eliminate these, reduce or moderate your intake of them.

  • Sugary foods
  • Grains or starches
  • Fruit (except smaller portions of berries)
  • Beans & legumes
  • Root Vegetables
  • Low fat or diet products
  • Alcohol
  • Sugar-free diet foods

The keto diet (like any diet) isn’t easy, and your body will take time to adjust. Ensure you listen to how your body reacts while dieting, as certain carbs are good for you! As with any change to your diet (drastic or minor), there can be potential consequences to your health. This diet isn’t for everyone but if it’s right for you, good luck and happy eating!
