Just Breathe: Air to Purify Your Mind & Soul

Breathe in…..breathe out……breathe in…… Breathe out….pause….

Look around. consider how much our environment has an impact on our mental and physical well-being. Consider how much a clear space to think and a clean space to breathe contributes to how we may center ourselves. A clouded atmosphere can not only affect our respiratory system but can also impact our mood and mental health. That why purifying our air contributes greatly to the purification of our mind.

In this week’s Live Well, we’ll take a look at 6 different ways to purify your mind and soul.

Bring Nature Indoors!

One of the best ways to purify your air and your soul is by bringing the outdoors indoors. Plants can help remove toxins from the air, by absorbing pollutants through their roots and leaves and subsequently breaking them down into less harmful compounds and converting the useable elements into energy. The color green also has a statistically calming effect on the human brain which contributes towards reducing stress and anxiety while promoting a sense of calm and relaxation. Some of the best air-purifying plants include the spider plant, peace lily, and snake plant.

Tip: always keep your plants leaves clean. Wipe off any dust with a damp sponge or gently rinse under a faucet. This ensures the plan may continue to perform its respiratory functions..

Use an Air Purifier

Air purifiers seek to improve indoor air quality by removing harmful particles such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke. They work by drawing in air through a series of filters, trapping contaminants, and releasing clean air back into the room. Some specialized air purifiers use UV-C light or ionizers to kill germs and viruses. If you’re suffering from allergies or respiratory issues, then these are incredible useful tools, as they can help reduce symptoms and improve overall health.

Tip: Air purifiers generally only clean the air, but ultimately don’t create cooling or heating effects in the room. There are some hybrid models, but likely you will need to use an air conditioner or fan with the machine.

Practice Meditation or Mindfulness

Meditation and mindfulness practices can help purify your soul by reducing stress and anxiety, promoting inner peace, and increasing self-awareness. There are many different types of meditation and mindfulness practices, including guided meditations, breathing exercises, and yoga. Find a practice that resonates with you and make it a part of your daily routine.

Tip: Whenever you’re suffering through peak anxiety, try the “10” technique. In order to do this, simply breathe in, hold it as long as you can, then exhale, counting down from 10 to 1. This works by giving your mind something to focus on, reorienting itself.

Use Essential Oils

Essential oils are natural oils extracted from plants that have many different health benefits. Some essential oils, such as lavender and peppermint, can help purify the air and promote relaxation and calmness. You can use essential oils in a diffuser, spray bottle, or by adding a few drops to your bath or shower. It’s always recommended to use essentials oils that are pure and free of additives. Many are highly concentrated, and they run the risk of being irritable to the skin if not diluted properly.

Tip: Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways, such as through inhalation, massage, or added to a bath or diffuser. It is important to use caution when using essential oils, as they can be potent and may cause adverse reactions if not used properly. Always review the label before applying.

Declutter your Space

A cluttered and disorganized space can contribute to stress and anxiety, making it harder to feel calm and relaxed. Always take some time to declutter your space and get rid of anything that no longer serves you. This can help create a more peaceful and serene environment that’s conducive to relaxation and meditation. It is always best to sort the items into categories and use the one-in-one-out rule, so you never get overwhelmed by the accumulation of new stuff.

Tip: Never tackle the whole space all at once and without a plan. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Start small, looking at organizing smaller sections and work your way counterclockwise around the room, giving your mind that sense of rhythm so that it sees the collection as a trail vs. an explosion.

Use Natural Cleaning Products

Using natural cleaning products helps purify the air in your home by reducing the number of harmful chemicals and toxins emmited in your home.

Conventional cleaning products often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can contribute to poor indoor air quality and exacerbate respiratory problems. Natural cleaning products, on the other hand, are made from non-toxic ingredients such as vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils, and are often fragrance-free. By choosing natural cleaning products, you can create a healthier home environment and improve air quality for you and your family.

Tip: Baking soda has been used for over a century as a way to deodorise, clean and scour away dirt.

You can easily use this alone to clean sinks, toilets, baths, ovens, fridges and surfaces to remove dirt and stains.
