The Big Thanksgiving Debate – Turkey Or Ham?
Because Thanksgiving is around the corner, we made the executive decision to unleash the most influential debate known to man this time of year (not really…but really). So, do you prefer the bird or the pig?
In other words, which is better – Turkey or Ham?
We asked a few different people “If you could only choose one meat to eat on Thanksgiving day, would you rather Turkey or Ham?” Here’s what they said about Turkey:
Turkey
Turkey has a rich, dark taste, and a strong, meaty flavor.
“I’d choose Turkey because it’s yummy on its own, but when paired with a flavor-packed side of gravy, it’s next-level-thanksgiving-goodness.”
“Turkey, because ham is pork.”
“I prefer Turkey meat over ham; however, I prefer to eat my turkey with the ham’s pineapple & cranberry compote instead of turkey gravy.”
“Turkey. It just tastes so good!”
“I’d eat turkey, but only because I don’t like ham.”
Turkey Facts
- Turkey is a great source of protein! There are 32 grams of protein in a 4 oz. serving of Turkey. That’s almost 65% of the recommended daily intake of protein for the average person!
- Turkey contains trace minerals that are thought to aid in cancer prevention, including selenium, which is a mineral that is essential for thyroid and immune system health.
- Turkey contains around 180 milligrams of phosphorus per serving – a chemical element used by your body to build healthy bones and teeth!
- One serving of Turkey has about 36% of the daily allowance of Vitamins B3 and B6 which help process fats and maintain steady blood sugar levels.
- Eating Turkey can regularly help lower cholesterol and stabilize insulin levels, don’t forget to eat those leftovers
Here’s what a few people had to say about Thanksgiving Ham:
Ham
Ham has a sweet, slightly smoky flavor and soft, juicy texture. It’s an impressionable meat and readily takes on the flavor of any sauce it’s glazed with.
“Ham is superior. It’s not too dry, has a better texture, and if seasoned right, a better flavor.”
“I’ve rarely had good turkey, but I’ve had tons of good ham.”
“I’d choose to eat ham because turkey is too dry, and I don’t like Turkey gravy.”
“Ham because it’s more versatile and turkey is very difficult to cook.”
“I prefer ham during Thanksgiving time because it feels seasonal. It’s not part of the normal rotation of meats, and I like the mix of the salty meat and sweet glaze sauce.”
Ham Facts
- Ham is relatively low in calories. One 3 oz. serving of ham contains about 139 calories
- This part of the pig contains a healthy dose of protein and iron.
- Ham contains higher amounts of thiamine, also known as, vitamin B1, which enables the body to use carbohydrates as energy. In other words, Ham contains a vitamin that is essential for improving your metabolism!
- Ham also has low saturated fat content.
Regardless of what has been mentioned above, both Turkey and Ham are considered staple dishes at dinner and are usually made together for the wondrous day in which we give thanks. So, who wins this debate?
