RE: Broccoli prices rise on lower volumes, quality issues

On September 20th, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported prices of $11 – $12.55 for cartons of bunched 14s from California, down from $16.25 – $16.56 last year at the same time but up from $5.50 – $6.65 at the end of August.

Extreme weather has affected the quality and reduced the volumes – with the loss of heads, brown bead (a discoloration of the bud clusters), pin rot and uneven yields. The overall weather pattern has created a shortage of high-quality product.

As a result, export markets have had to scramble to meet demand.
