Quality & Supply Update
The Salinas Valley growing region has been experiencing unseasonally hot weather, with temperatures reaching as high as 108 ?F. The heat has caused stress in the crops and compromised the cellular structure. This breakdown has resulted in the spread of Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV) through the fields, which has killed the yields and normal growth patterns of commodities.
As a direct result, Iceberg, Romaine, Tender Leaf items, Broccoli, Cauliflower, and ALL Berries are experiencing quality issues such as bruising, black discoloration, sunscald, tip burn, fringe burn, and other heat related quality issues. This is also causing an industry wide shortage of these commodities, as the heat and quality is preventing the average crop yield.
